That man is James Bluett of Cinderford Gloucester, He did survive the war but lost an eye to an enemy sniper. He lied about his age to join up and served with the Oxfordshire and Buckinhamshire light infantry. After the war he returned to Cinderford married twice and had 2 daughters he died aged 87.

Pie Jesu translation: quite apt
"Lord, have mercy,
Lord, have mercy,
You who take away the sins of the world;
Grant them peace,
Grant them peace.
Lamb of God, Lamb of God,
Lamb of God, Lamb of God,
You who take away the sins of the world;
Grant them peace,
Grant them peace.
Peace everlasting, everlasting."

Has to be the worst battle of all time - and people do not give them their dues.
Lots of brave boys that died for each other and did not get a VC.
Hope the chiefs that sent them over could live with those stupid decisions!

Brave men - my grandad was sunk on the Ark Royal off Gibraltar but the Somme has to be the most horrific battle ever!
Hope he and his regiment did OK and that he had a good life after.
And he was probably around to remember his friends that did not make it back to us!

It's scary to think that a whole generation was lost there, the bravery of those guys was immense, 2:08 to 2:11 is very sad, one guy doesn't even get out of the trench.
All of those guys are heroes

Wow, that's sad as hell. Look at the lower left corner of the screen at 2:09, he didn't even get out of the trench before getting killed. His body just sunk right back in.
I think the trenches were possibly either more horrific than the D-Day Invasion or just the same. Every soul there should not be forgotten..

I 've visited the Somme, Verdun, Ypres, Vimmy, Albert Bapaume Road, Caribou Park, Aire Sur La Lys and most of where WWI battles took place. Saw what's left of the trenches and also military cemeteries. I imagined these brave men on those days. It is amazing actually seeing them in this video, although I've already seen these footage somewhere else.
