Theremin Lesson One

Uploaded by: ThomasGrillo
Video Description:
http://www.thomasgrillo.com
A short introductory theremin lesson to playing notes, executing dynamic vibratto, and dynamic volume with the theremin. Playing errors included to demonstrate how difficult it is to play the theremin well.
To get a closer look at the aereal finger technique, right click on the video, select "zoom in" set to desired zoom, and drag the image to where you can see the hand.
Instructed by Thomas Grillo on Moog Etherwave Pro theremin.
This is not a substitute for professional how to play videos, books, or in-person instruction with a professional instructor.
This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being studied by me.

You liturally rock ! :)
How fast can you play on a instrument like this ? I've been thinking of buying a moog etherwave and play it aside the guitar in my indie-band. No fast solos or anything at all but harmonic phrases.
I can actually play ... ( 1 week ago by ThomasGrillo)
I can actually play 16th, and 32nd notes in fast runs, but mainly as long as the phrases are scales, or arpagios, but you want to avoid trying that with very wide intervols. ;)

Howdy! I understand that you prefer to use your right hand over the volume loop, however, I have seen other right-handed thereminists that prefer to turn the instrument around so that the left hand controls the amplitude of notes. I'd imagine this system would be more intuitive to people familiar with string instruments. Can you elaborate on the pros and cons of each system? Is one way or the other considered standard practice?
Thank you for these videos!

Actually, you're thinking in mirror image terms, as if viewing your own reflection. In this video, I am actually using MY left hand over the volume loop.
However, with stringed instruments, like guitars, violins, ect, the left hand of the player controls pitch.
With theremins, it turns out that Leon originaly built it the way it is now, but Clara Rockmore chose to simply learn how to play it as it was, rather than trouble Leon to redesign it.
Theremins can be turned round for opposites.

.....weird.
so would that be a percussion instrument or what?
Array ( 4 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
A great question!
We don't strike theremins like drums, or pianos, so they're not percussion.
They have no strings, or reeds, so they're none of those, but they do sometimes have brass antennas, but they're not brass instruments either.
They use no wind, so they're not woodwind.
They are electronic, and are considered synthesizers, so they'd be considered electronic.
They use a non-tactile interface, and are therefore justurally controlled.

What exactly is the range of the theremin? I've heard it's roughly analogous to that of the cello, is this correct?
Modern theremins ... ( 3 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
Modern theremins usually have between 5,and 6 plus octaves, but most theremin compositions are written to suit a 4 or 5 max octave range, just to be safe.

Visit ethermusicfest on the web. They have a link to Hispano TV which video recorded the theremin orchestra back in April at Ethermusic 2008 in Asheviell North Carolina.
Also, visit Kevinkissinger on the web. I believe he has a recording he did by multitracking multiple theremin lines he played on a piece called Ave Verum Corpus. I think he did at least 4 or 5 parts, all on theremin.
